Gendun Chopel was the master of all these forms, composing poems that displayed a high level of technical skill but that remained at once elegant and earthy. (Poems 31, 53, 54, 61, 74, and 79 are all alphabetical poems, something that unfortunately cannot be duplicated in translation.) He most often wrote nine-syllable verses, but ranged from as short as seven or eight to as long as eleven or fifteen. As an example of his wordplay, one might consider the following excerpt from poem 5:

Each line is nine syllables in length. Each of the first four lines begins with one of the four cardinal directions: East (char), South (lho), West (nub), North (byang). Each of the next four lines begins with the same syllable: rgya (pronounced gya), meaning "broad" or "vast:" All of this, sadly, is lost in translation:
